The usual suspect

  1. The usual suspect is classified as a crime thriller, for example the death of 27 men's but also because the protagonist is a detective (puzzle). The fact that it just shows the dead bodies on the lying on the pier creates theatre of the mind, which is a convention of a thriller film.

The exterior/interior lighting is usually dark, which is conventional in a thriller film because it creates a sense of enigma, for example the hidden face of the man, who held the gun towards the camera. This character with the hidden profile leaves a deep impression towards the audience because the gun signifies violence and danger (convention), which hints to the audience that he maybe the cause of the deaths.

When the movement of the camera starts of slow it made the scene seemed suspicious (bad events may occur)and at the same time tension slowly builds up. And that the atmosphere created through the interior lighting seemed eerie, for example it slowly changes from light to red and finally black as the camera moves closer to the door. Which represents that the truth of the mystery is tinted with blood and darkness. When slowly as the the trailer progress the movement of the camera speeds up along with the music (the music gets dramatic), which builds tension and hints that things are getting serious ie: action

Camera shots that were used includes close up on certain part of the human body, for example at 0:18 of the trailer you could only see someone is walking and the darkness that blends in with the black shoe shows the convention of hidden and enigma.

And the long shots were used to introduce the suspects signifies that the truth behind the hidden mystery is still very distance and it could be a red herring. The camera shot such as a establishing shot is usually used in the beginning to introduce the location and time, however this trailer has not included the establishing shot which gives a sense of enigma code.
