  1. Note:*This clip, is in mandarin but it is subtitled in english.

Social class was representated through the mise en scene, for example the costume of the girl in the beginning, she was wearing an elegant dress, which signifies her care in her presentation and that she is formal, which conforms the conventions of a high social class.

But when we see her actually day dreaming, her costume was very casual, for example T-shirt and trousers. This conforms the conventions of a low social class.

The social class is also representated, through the lightings, for example in the beginning of the scene, we immediately see the bright interior lighting, which connotes that she is wealthy enough to pay all the light/ electricity bills, which conforms the conventions of high social class.

  2. The white colour of her costume, also represents that she is high social class because the colour white reflects off the lights, which signifies that she is dominant, which conforms the conventions of a wealthy person/high social class.

The white costume also connotes that she is wealthy because isn't worried about her clothes getting stained (could afford clothings or cleaners). Which conforms to the conventions of high social class people because it connotes on how dominant she is.

The social class is also representated through the cinematography, for example the constant use of a long shot in the beging signifies that she owns alot of properties and the whole space in the scene. Which conforms to the conventions of high social class because it connotes on how wealthy and powerful she is.

There are also a close up shot of her when it reveals that she is actually dreaming, which makes her dominant, even though she is poor and supose to have less power over the her rich self. This subverts the conventions of a low social class.

  3. Min Yee, you have made some good analysis showing an understanding of social class. However you have discussed mise en scene and cinematography, not sound and cinematography - please check my blog to get your homework accurate. You also needed to quote dialogue and refer to the rule of thirds. However what you have said is correct and you have mainly stuck to the PEE structure which is good. Could bright interior lighting connote her power rather than her ability to pay the bills? A solid effort but make sure you understand the requirements of the hmk.
